There are some cynics who believe that we are powerless to bring about massive change. I would strongly disagree with that.

…as would Friends of the Earth UK.

Message to supporters:

Together we’ve done it!

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us on our Big Ask campaign. Together we have finally got a strong Climate Change Law.

Parliament voted on 28 October for the world-beating legislation after a 3 and a half year campaign by Friends of the Earth. The first of its kind in the world, the Law is a huge step in the fight against climate change.

The Law commits the Government to 80 per cent cuts in the UK’s emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050, including emissions from aviation and shipping, and with annual targets along the way to keep us on track.

This really is an astonishing achievement. And you helped make this happen – thank you!

And there’s more great news for the planet: Obama got elected! This is fantastic, what we’ve needed for so long.

  1. Personally, while they were debating it, I felt that is an incredibly meaningless act. 80% reduction is certainly a headline grabbing figure, but 2050? That effectively invalidates it. Will any of todays MPs still be alive then? Who will take responsibility? If they were serious about climate change they would have opted for a smaller reduction, but over say 5-10 years. Clearly the government is still unwilling to take steps to tackle climate change seriously.
Sorry to put a damper on your enthusiasm.

  2. Thanks for your comment Ronny.

    Time flies.

You’re not putting a damper on my enthusiasm because I don’t share your pessimism. As with Thomas on my following post, you appear to be focusing on what has not been achieved rather than what has been achieved. Of course, there’s no problem with doing so if that’s what works for you, but personally, I find that focusing on the positive whilst continuing to work for continued change in the right direction makes life a good deal more exciting, happy, challenging and worthwhile.

But that’s just my opinion. 🙂
