An extraordinary show of creativity… full-length star wars movie, made by stitching together about 500 x 15 second clips, all made by fans in their own way. Contains some wonderful acting/stop-motion/animation etc

video image

Finally, the crowd-sourced project has been stitched together and put online for your streaming pleasure. The "Director's Cut" is a feature-length film that contains hand-picked scenes from the entire StarWarsUncut.com collection.

Many thanks to Aaron Valdez (video editor – http://www.aaronvaldez.com) and Bryan Pugh (sound design/mixing – http://www.pughtube.com) for the countless hours they put into this masterpiece.

The Story:

In 2009, thousands of Internet users were asked to remake "Star Wars: A New Hope" into a fan film, 15 seconds at a time. Contributors were allowed to recreate scenes from Star Wars however they wanted. Within just a few months SWU grew into a wild success. The creativity that poured into the project was unimaginable.

SWU has been featured in documentaries, news features and conferences around the world for its unique appeal. In 2010 we won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Creative Achievement In Interactive Media.

We can't thank everyone enough for making this such a special project.

During a trip to Ishinomaki in November, 2011, we interviewed a number of survivors and let them tell us about how the recovery is going.

Set up by a swiss gov official, caught inside a small compound on top of a hill used for ‘secret stuff’. They’d already impounded my radio controlled helicopter, which was going crazy inside a big cage filled with other impounded children’s toys, mostly disney-character helium balloons. I then was set free, so visited the hotel Kleine Scheidegg where I used to work. Business was not too good, so the way of attracting customers these days was a game of pool – the goal of which was to pot all the balls in pint glasses of beer. Made a mess of the furniture.

Been looking for a really simple interface that would allow others to upload docs to my Dropbox. Was using Airdropper, but they seem to be having 404 issues now, and $9 a month is too much for an unreliable service.

Tonight discovered http://www.jotform.com/ – like it a lot! Easy to create your own forms for embedding on your own website, including file-upload forms that can be linked to your dropbox account. Bought a one-year subscription.

Is a robot which set a Guinness World Record of 5.270 s for the fastest robot solving a Rubik's Cube on 11th Nov 2011 .The CubeStormer II is built from four Lego Mindstorm NXT kits, which are controlled by a custom-made Android app running on a Samsung Galaxy S II. The bot takes a photo of each side, then computes the most efficient way to rotate to the parts so that each side shows just one colour. The project was commissioned by ARM Holdings and designed and built by Mike Dobson and David Gilday. The official human fastest time is 5.66 s

Tried out these awesome hydraulic massage socks/tights. Absolutely bloomin' marvellous. Ideal for after running – just 15 minutes made a huge difference. Shame they cost about $1,700!

As I was sitting there I was thinking how good a whole body version would be.

Or maybe not.

When I got my iPhone 4S a couple of months ago I was excited at the prospect of talking to it, of having it truly understand what I was saying, Of having it respond to my every vocalised wish.

But I was also curious if a couple of months down the line I'd still be talking to it, or whether it would just be an initial fad that would soon turn out to be impractical, that had no place in my daily life.

Well, here I am two months later still talking, and with the iPhone still listening.

But how am I actually using this functionality?

Being based in Japan, of course i'm already limited by the fact that I can't use location or business data in my Siri searches. So, when it comes to Siri itself, I actually only use it for setting my alarm clock at nighttime, checking the weather forecast, occasionally looking up odd bits of information or checking the latest exchange rates on Wolfram.

The problem I find is that when I'm in a situation that is most likely to benefit from Siri's assistance, (i.e. when I don't have my MacBook with me) I'm usually in a social situation, and sadly people seem to think I'm showing off if i use Siri – as opposed to just using the best tool I have to hand to retrieve the required information in the fastest possible time. For that reason, I don't use Siri much socially.

Of course you don't have to use Siri to take advantage of voice recognition on the iPhone, as it works in all applications wherever text input possible. Text messages, emails, twitter updates, and Google+ posts; all of these can now be dictated. I use this functionality all the time. I find that when it comes to SMS, it feels far more natural to speak my replies than to tap them out the keyboard. My wife can always tell when I'm using dictation as my messages tend to be much longer than they used to be.

The short walk home from the railway station has become a great opportunity to catch up on private emails, and I find I can get through them much quicker if I'm just speaking my replies. I get home feeling satisfied by all the work I've done just in that short space of time.

The accuracy isn't bad either, and I may be wrong, but it seems that it's getting more accurate the more I use it (I know it's supposed to do this, but I was sceptical whether that really was the case or not when I first started using it.)

Anyhow, now I am finally home I better put the iPhone down and get on with the washing up. Siri doesn't seem to like running water, and nor does her host!

Been looking into mobile app development for #TEDxTokyo. Personally, I'm not convinced when it comes to mobile apps for events that only occur once a year, have no new material for 10 months. When I go to a conference I might download the app, but I find that I rarely look at it after that.

Based on what I've seen of Mobile Roadie apps it seems that post-event, in-app videos get very few plays/likes/comments. More a case of having-an-app for the sake of having an app.

Personally, I think it would be better to invest in a decent mobile site, which could replicate much of the functionality of an app in any case.

Does anyone know of any examples of event-related apps that have bee a huge hit / add great value (apart from the official TED app which is fueled by a gazillion talks)?

We've just returned from our local shrine here just to the north of Tokyo where hot, sweet rice wine is being handed out to everyone in line to say their New Year prayers – and burn last year's charms.
