My first season in the Swiss Alps in 1997 taught me a few things, one of which was that there was a huge world out there full of people who could teach me an awful lot. I couldn't bear the thought of returning to Herefordshire for that Summer, and so instead I headed for America, where I joined a community of 300 people my own age who came from over thirty different countries.
