The 6km Guam Banana that Wanted to be a Bay

It's late here in Guam, and I've just got back in from a run. One thing I've found – there are not as many roads on Guam as in central Tokyo. So, when it comes to the Art of Running, there's not much to work with.

Having said that, we went to local market this evening, where a couple of locals had a stunning array of banana varieties on display. This triggered a thought: "Hmmm, bananas. I'm sure there's an ancient legend about them, connected with the local bay…"

A quick search, and sure enough, I found it: The story* goes that there was once a banana that so wanted to be a beautiful coral-lined bay, that it deliberately ate too much for months on end, and consumed thousands of litres of water, until it had grown to the size of the bay. It then snuggled up behind the bay and whispered in its ear, "Can we swap places for a day?"

On hearing this, the bay turned around and said, "Don't be stupid, you're a banana".

It's not known what happened to the banana after that.

Anyway, that's why I ran this route tonight.

*the story isn't actually true. Although I was actually inspired by a banana seller at the local market tonight.

Hello from the Mariana archipelago!

Had a little drama getting to Guam today…

I don't know what it is about me and airports, but I also seem to manage to create some sort of drama.

Two years ago, when flying from London to Barcelona, I managed to leave my wallet on the airport shuttle bus. This led to a series of events that finally resulted in me flying to spain with just my passport and all our money – and without my wife – on what was supposed to be a mini-honeymoon trip for us. Twinkle Tame, who I'd left at security with all our luggage and no money, was forced to miss the flight and catch a later one. Looking back now I can hardly believe I managed to get us into a situation like that, and I totally deserved the kick I got from Twinkle when she finally arrived at Barcelona.

Today though, Twinkle Tame had everything very well organised. Bus to the airport, flights and all, everything in good time.

I'd made sure to bring along my new passport with its RFID chip – this was to be its first trip. It was only when we got to the immigration check that I realised that I had forgotten something …my visa and reentry permit, which were both in my old passport …at home.

I approached an immigration official and told him what I'd done.

He immediately asked me for my Alien Registration Card, which as a foreigner I'm obliged to carry at all times, and which he could use to check my status. I opened my wallet where I always kept it …and it wasn't there! I checked again, and nope, nothing. Why???!!

Then I remembered – just yesterday I was sorting out a new Paypal account, and had had to submit a copy of my card, so I'd taken it out of my wallet to scan it, and had forgotten to put it back in. It was still in the scanner.

This was a big problem. No visa. No re-entry permit. No gaijin card. If I left, I wouldn't be able to get back in to Japan.

I felt a bit sick – but then remembered Evernote,

I've been using Evernote for a few years now, and have well over 5,000 notes in there now. I use it for all sorts of things, such as daily backups of all my tweets for later reference, searchable scans of all business cards, automatic downloads of photos that friends tag me in on Facebook (!), all sorts of shared notes for various projects, searchable PDF product manuals, and recording my audio diary.

…and copies of my passport & gaijin card.

"No, no, we can't accept a copy" he said, gesturing for us to follow him to the immigration office.

As we walked I showed him the copy of my card in Evernote on my iPhone. He looked at it, looked again, and seemed to change his mind.

"Well, let me take a note of the card number and see if I can find it in our system. There's not much time until your flight, but I might be able to transfer your permit if I can find your record".

And ten minutes later, he handed back my new passport, complete with a freshly printed copy of my permit. We were good to go!

We ran down the corridor, making it on board just before the doors were closed.

So, thank you to the guy in immigration for bending the rules and acting so fast to get us on this flight 🙂

Heading South

The last two years have been crazy busy, so much so that @twinkletame and I haven't had a proper holiday since New Year 2011.

When Twinkle's resignation from her previous job coincided with the unexpected cancellation of a big project I was working on, we found ourselves with a bit of time, so decided to use the opportunity to realise a long-held ambition – to go skydiving.

We're heading 2,400km south to Guam, where later in the week we'll jump from a plane at about 14,000 feet.

Provided we survive the fall I'll upload the video when we get back!

Took this photo a few minutes ago here at Narita Airport as the planes were taking off and landing.

行ってきます!

Today's weather in Tokyo was just fantastic

So many sudden torrential downpours, dramatic cloud formations, sunlight and wind. Got a great view from my home office, able to keep the doors open even when it rains thanks to the rain-proof balcony design.

That's one reason I'm so happy to be working from home again – I feel much more connected with the rhythm of the city.

Having a 10 metre commute from the futon is handy too.

What an unforgettable 10 days it's been.

The Tokyo Marathon was, once again, tough! Still, with the support of over 42,000 live viewers on my Ustream channels I made it to the goal.

Following that there was a few crazy hours to get turned around and head out to California for TED – I was at the Fellows Dinner that same evening (thanks to the time difference).

TED was awesome. So inspiring. Looking forward to seeing the presentations again online.

Arrived back home this morning to post-marathon chaos. Need some time now to catch up, deal with all sorts of things that have been put on hold these past two months. Downtime is important, need more of that to allow the Ideas Worth Spreading to bubble to the surface.

An extraordinary show of creativity… full-length star wars movie, made by stitching together about 500 x 15 second clips, all made by fans in their own way. Contains some wonderful acting/stop-motion/animation etc

video image

Finally, the crowd-sourced project has been stitched together and put online for your streaming pleasure. The "Director's Cut" is a feature-length film that contains hand-picked scenes from the entire StarWarsUncut.com collection.

Many thanks to Aaron Valdez (video editor – http://www.aaronvaldez.com) and Bryan Pugh (sound design/mixing – http://www.pughtube.com) for the countless hours they put into this masterpiece.

The Story:

In 2009, thousands of Internet users were asked to remake "Star Wars: A New Hope" into a fan film, 15 seconds at a time. Contributors were allowed to recreate scenes from Star Wars however they wanted. Within just a few months SWU grew into a wild success. The creativity that poured into the project was unimaginable.

SWU has been featured in documentaries, news features and conferences around the world for its unique appeal. In 2010 we won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Creative Achievement In Interactive Media.

We can't thank everyone enough for making this such a special project.

When I got my iPhone 4S a couple of months ago I was excited at the prospect of talking to it, of having it truly understand what I was saying, Of having it respond to my every vocalised wish.

But I was also curious if a couple of months down the line I'd still be talking to it, or whether it would just be an initial fad that would soon turn out to be impractical, that had no place in my daily life.

Well, here I am two months later still talking, and with the iPhone still listening.

But how am I actually using this functionality?

Being based in Japan, of course i'm already limited by the fact that I can't use location or business data in my Siri searches. So, when it comes to Siri itself, I actually only use it for setting my alarm clock at nighttime, checking the weather forecast, occasionally looking up odd bits of information or checking the latest exchange rates on Wolfram.

The problem I find is that when I'm in a situation that is most likely to benefit from Siri's assistance, (i.e. when I don't have my MacBook with me) I'm usually in a social situation, and sadly people seem to think I'm showing off if i use Siri – as opposed to just using the best tool I have to hand to retrieve the required information in the fastest possible time. For that reason, I don't use Siri much socially.

Of course you don't have to use Siri to take advantage of voice recognition on the iPhone, as it works in all applications wherever text input possible. Text messages, emails, twitter updates, and Google+ posts; all of these can now be dictated. I use this functionality all the time. I find that when it comes to SMS, it feels far more natural to speak my replies than to tap them out the keyboard. My wife can always tell when I'm using dictation as my messages tend to be much longer than they used to be.

The short walk home from the railway station has become a great opportunity to catch up on private emails, and I find I can get through them much quicker if I'm just speaking my replies. I get home feeling satisfied by all the work I've done just in that short space of time.

The accuracy isn't bad either, and I may be wrong, but it seems that it's getting more accurate the more I use it (I know it's supposed to do this, but I was sceptical whether that really was the case or not when I first started using it.)

Anyhow, now I am finally home I better put the iPhone down and get on with the washing up. Siri doesn't seem to like running water, and nor does her host!

Been looking into mobile app development for #TEDxTokyo. Personally, I'm not convinced when it comes to mobile apps for events that only occur once a year, have no new material for 10 months. When I go to a conference I might download the app, but I find that I rarely look at it after that.

Based on what I've seen of Mobile Roadie apps it seems that post-event, in-app videos get very few plays/likes/comments. More a case of having-an-app for the sake of having an app.

Personally, I think it would be better to invest in a decent mobile site, which could replicate much of the functionality of an app in any case.

Does anyone know of any examples of event-related apps that have bee a huge hit / add great value (apart from the official TED app which is fueled by a gazillion talks)?

Happy New Year to all!

We've just returned from our local shrine here just to the north of Tokyo where hot, sweet rice wine is being handed out to everyone in line to say their New Year prayers – and burn last year's charms.

Best viewed in HD! The "nerdglasses" made meaningful! Even though the smartphone and services like Runkeeper and Nike+ have transformed our training into something more social and made it easier to track our progress, a smartphone on the arm, or in the hand, while exercising is still a quite awkward situation. While these services are more focused on the post workout experience, we have created a concept which can make the actual running, skiing, biking or other workouts more meaningful and fun, using the Gosta glasses. The name is a tribute to former Swedish runner Gösta Holmér, the inventor of Fartlek. A type of interval training.

Google Plus to WordPress via ifttt

I've not been too active on Google+ of late. One of those months when life has taken over, leaving little time to document it. My intention to do daily updates from LeWeb'11 was edged out by more pressing needs – such as ensuring that the iRun was working. (In the end I opted for a series of Audioboo updates, which enabled me to document a lot more, in relatively little time).

One reason I haven't been so active on Google+ is that Facebook is working well for me when it comes to short updates, photos and so forth. I get a fair bit of feedback on most posts – it makes it feel worthwhile, and thus diminishes the 'need' to post either on G+ or my blog.

However, whatever I post on Facebook is limited to being on facebook – and I would prefer to have it on my own site. That's one reason I've been looking forward to G+ releasing a proper API, allowing for my data to flow exactly where I want it to flow.

In the meantime, I've discovered http://ifttt.com (If This Then That) . I love it. I've set it up to post my instagram photos to flickr, to share my Google Reader starred items on Twitter, and allegedly to post my Public Google+ updates on my WordPress site – which I'm now testing with this post.

I've never had much luck with autopost-to-wordpress services, they always seem a bit temperamental.

One thing I'm curious about is the blog title – where's it going to get that from? Well, I guess all will be revealed in about 15 minutes from now at http://tamegoeswild.com

In other new-service news, I've just started using Insync – syncs your Google docs with your desktop. Impressed, I bought 200GB of Google storage and moved my entire photo collection (about 34,000 images, JPEG only, excluding all the RAW files) into that folder on my Mac, meaning that I will finally have a cloud-based storage solution for them too (I use a 100GB Dropbox account for all other docs, and Evernote for the little bits and pieces).

Anyhow, best post this and see what happens.

Put the internet to work for you.
